What a temporary roof is
A temporary roof is a weatherproof cover built over the scaffold, so a roof can be stripped and replaced without rain getting into the building. They are used for roof replacements, structural roof work, extensions, loft conversions and heritage buildings. See our temporary roof systems page.
What affects the price
- Span and area: wider roofs need beams or trusses and more sheeting.
- Height: taller buildings need more scaffold underneath.
- Wind exposure: coastal and exposed sites need extra tying and design.
- Duration: longer jobs mean more hire and more inspections.
- Access: lorry, forklift or crane access for the roof components.
- Encapsulation: sheeting the sides as well as the top adds material and labour.

What is included in an HTK quote
Your quotation sets out what is included, such as design where needed, erection of the scaffold and roof, the agreed hire period, handover documentation and dismantling. Extended hire and adaptations are shown separately on the quote.
Is it worth it?
On a job where the roof will be open for days or weeks, a temporary roof protects the building, the contents and the programme. It lets trades keep working in bad weather. On our heritage project in Haywards Heath, a large span temporary roof kept the building dry through the whole refurbishment.

Can I add a temporary roof to an existing scaffold?
Sometimes, but the scaffold underneath may need strengthening. We would need to check it first.
How long does a temporary roof take to put up?
